Este miércoles 1 de abril, la NASA ha marcado un hito fundamental al lanzar con éxito la misión Artemis II, la primera misión tripulada hacia las inmediaciones de la Luna en más de 50 años (desde la era Apolo).
El cohete Space Launch System (SLS) despegó desde el histórico Complejo de Lanzamiento 39B del Centro Espacial Kennedy, en Florida. Aunque hubo una breve pausa técnica previa para resolver ajustes menores, el lanzamiento se concretó según lo previsto en la ventana de hoy.
A bordo de la cápsula Orión viajan cuatro astronautas que representan una nueva era de diversidad y cooperación internacional:
Reid Wiseman (Comandante, NASA)
Victor Glover (Piloto, NASA)
Christina Koch (Especialista de misión, NASA)
Jeremy Hansen (Especialista de misión, Agencia Espacial Canadiense)
A diferencia de un alunizaje, esta misión es una prueba crítica de 10 días diseñada para validar los sistemas de soporte vital, navegación y comunicaciones en el espacio profundo antes de futuras misiones que sí descenderán en la Luna (Artemis IV).
Se espera que la misión establezca nuevos récords de distancia, alejando a la humanidad más de 400,000 kilómetros de la Tierra y permitiendo a la tripulación observar la cara oculta de nuestro satélite natural.
La nave ya se encuentra en su trayectoria inicial. Durante los próximos días, la tripulación realizará maniobras de validación de sistemas.
El amerizaje de regreso en el océano Pacífico está programado para el próximo 10 de abril, donde equipos especializados de la NASA y la Marina de EE. UU. los estarán esperando para su recuperación y evaluación médica.
Este lanzamiento no solo es una hazaña técnica, sino el paso necesario para establecer una presencia humana sostenible en la Luna y, eventualmente, preparar el camino para futuras misiones a Marte.
