Despliega del USS Iwo Jima en el Caribe

La Marina de Estados Unidos intensifica su presencia en el Caribe con el despliegue del buque de asalto anfibio USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7), según imágenes recientes compartidas por SA Defensa. Este martes, el buque realizó entrenamientos en alta mar, incluyendo operaciones con helicópteros y aviones de ala fija, mientras se dirige al sur del Caribe. La misión, que incluye a los buques USS San Antonio y USS Fort Lauderdale, transporta unos 4,500 efectivos, entre ellos 2,200 infantes de marina. El objetivo es combatir el narcotráfico, con foco en carteles como el de los Soles, según fuentes del Pentágono. Este movimiento coincide con tensiones regionales, tras acusaciones de EE.UU. contra el régimen venezolano.

Entrenamientos del USS Iwo Jima en alta mar

El USS Iwo Jima, un buque clase Wasp, ejecutó maniobras con cazas AV-8B Harrier y helicópteros MV-22 Osprey, según reportes de la 22ª Unidad Expedicionaria de Marines. Además, preparó armamento como misiles RAM y Sea Sparrow. Estas operaciones, realizadas en el Atlántico, demuestran la capacidad del buque para misiones anfibias y de proyección de fuerza, clave en la estrategia antidrogas de EE.UU. en el Caribe, según la Marina.

Estrategia antidrogas en el Caribe

El despliegue incluye destructores clase Arleigh Burke y un submarino nuclear, USS Newport News, reforzando la vigilancia marítima. EE.UU. busca neutralizar redes de narcotráfico, según Reuters. Aunque la Marina describe la misión como rutinaria, su escala y proximidad a Venezuela han generado críticas de Nicolás Maduro, quien activó milicias en respuesta. Colombia apoya la operación, según el Ministerio de Defensa, mientras Cuba la rechaza.
