A passenger train collided with a small bus on Friday and dragged it several meters, resulting in the death of seven people and injuries to five others, according to the police and firefighters of Chile.

The accident occurred at a railroad crossing near the commune of San Pedro de La Paz, 500 kilometers south of the Chilean capital, as the train was heading to the nearby commune of Coronel.

Police Major Juan Francisco Carrasco stated that the minibus was carrying 14 passengers, of whom seven died. The nearby Guillermo Grant Benavente Hospital reported five serious injuries, three of which required surgery.

The railway company reported in a statement that the collision occurred at a railroad crossing, whose barriers were down as a signal that the train was approaching, which was confirmed «after reviewing the onboard security camera in the cabin.»

It added that there are drivers who «daily do not respect the barriers.»
